4、alysespassivisationinchiShonawithintheHead-DrivenPhraseStructureGrammar(HPSG)theoreticalframework.Wetreatpassivesasoperationsontheargumentstructureofaverb,representedasanestedlistjustlikecausatives.Wedescribepassivetypologyandexplicateitsmorpho-syntacticcharacteristicswithregard
5、stocomplexpredication.Weconclude,incontradistinctiontothevalencealteringcausativecounterpartthat,thoughpassivesarecomplexmorphologically,ontheoverall,theyarenotcomplexpredicates.Ourconclusionsarebasedontheunavailabilityofaktionsartalternations,lackofeventmodificationandtheinabil
6、itytobeaccountedforthroughargumentcomposition.WerevealthatchiShonaintransitivespassivise,whichisevidencethatpassivisationisabackgroundingratherthanforegroundingoperation.Weexaminetherelationshipbetweenpassivesandcausatives,discoveringthatdifferentpassivisationpossibilitiesareava
