2、beendevelopedoveraperiodofthirtyyears.Thishasbeenpossibleduetostudiesintotherelationshipsbetweenthemicrostructuresandpropertiesofthefibres.Avarietyoftechniqueshavebeenemployedbyresearchteamsonthreecontinents.Thefibresaremadebytheconversionofpolymerprecursorstoceramicfibresandallthreeg

3、enerationsarepresentlyproducedcommercially.Thenatureoftheprecursorandthetechniquesusedforcross-linkinghavebeenvariedinordertooptimisebothpropertiesandcostofmanufacture.Ithasbeenpossibletoimprovethecharacteristicsofthefibresastheprocessesinvolvedinthecross-linkingoftheprecursorfibresh

4、avebeenbetterunderstoodandthemechanismsgoverningbothroomtemperatureandhightemperaturebehaviourdetermined.Theresultisthat,althoughfirstgenerationfibreswerelimitedbyalowYoungsmodulusatroomtemperatureandbycreepandinstabilityofthestructureattemperaturesfarlowerthanthoselimitingthebehavio

5、urofbulksiliconcarbide,thethirdgenerationfibresshowsmanyofthecharacteristicsofstoichiometricsiliconcarbide.Thisremarkableimprovementincharacteristicshasbeenduetoathoroughunderstandingofthematerialssciencegoverningthebehaviourofthesefibreswhicharereinforcementsforceramicmatrixcomposit
