3、t'.ThompsonandThetela1995)toexploreacentralformofinteractionalresource:theinclusioninthetextofavoicethatisintendedtobeattributabletothereader.IidentifyaparticularsetofdiscoursecontextsinwhichthishappensÐwherethewriterbringsinthereader'sviewinordertocontradictitÐandoutlinethelexico-grammati

4、calfeatureswhichsignaltheothervoiceinthosecontexts;andIplacetheseinabroaderperspectiveonwrittentextasastage-managedformofdialogue.Theimpetusforthestudycomesfromworkingwithnovicewriters;andIdiscussanumberofexampleswherewrittendraftswereimprovedbyexploitingtheinteractionalresourcesdescribed,

5、andargueforthevalueofraisingstudents'awarenessoftheseresources.Ithaslongbeenacceptedthatdevelopingtheskillofeectivewritinginvolves,amongstotherthings,developinganawarenessoftheaudienceandanabilitytore¯ectandexploitthatawarenessinthewaythetextiswritten.seee.g.Nystrand1986;KirschandRoen1990;
