1、EugeneA.Nida (born November11,1914 )isthedeveloperofthedynamic-equivalenceBible-translationtheory.LifeNidawasborninOklahomaCity,Oklahomaon November11,1914. HebecameaChristianatayoungage,whenherespondedtothealtarcallathischurch“toacceptChristasmySaviour.”HegraduatedsummacumlaudefromtheUniversityof
2、Californiain1936.AftergraduatingheattendedCampWycliffe,whereBibletranslationtheorywastaught.HeministeredforashorttimeamongtheTarahumaraIndiansinMexico,untilhealthproblemsduetoaninadequatedietandthehighaltitudeforcedhimtoleave.Sometimeinthisperiod,NidabecameafoundingchartermemberofWycliffeBibleTra
3、nslators,asisterorganizationoftheSummerInstituteofLinguistics.In1937,NidaundertookstudiesattheUniversityofSouthernCalifornia,whereheobtainedaMaster’sDegreeinNewTestamentGreekin1939.Inthatsameyear,EugeneNidabecameinterimpastorofCalvaryChurchofSantaAna,CA,afterthefoundingpastorresignedin1939.Inspit
4、eofhisconservativebackground,inlateryearsNidabecameincreasinglyecumenicalandNewEvangelicalinhisapproach.In1943NidareceivedhisPh.D.inLinguisticsfromtheUniversityofMichigan,hewasordainedasaBaptistminister,andhemarriedAltheaLucilleSprague.ThecoupleremainedmarrieduntilAltheaSpragueNida'sdeathin1993.I
5、n1997,NidamarriedDr.ElenaFernandez,atranslatorandinterpreter.Nidaretiredintheearly1980sandcurrentlylivesinBrussels,Belgium.CareerIn1943NidabeganhiscareerasalinguistwiththeAmericanBibleSociety(ABS).HewasquicklypromotedtoAssociateSecretaryforVersions,thenworkedasExecutiveSecretaryforTranslationsunt
6、ilhisretirement.NidawasinstrumentalinengineeringthejointeffortbetweentheVaticanandtheUnitedBibleSocieties(UBS)toproducecross-denominationalBiblesintranslationsacrosstheglobe.Thisworkbeganin1968andwascarriedoninaccordancewithNida'stranslationprincipleofFunctionalEquivalence.TranslationandLinguisti
