3、oolin1882,andspentasinglesemesteratOahuCollege,beforehiselderbrothersenthimbacktoChinaattheageof17.SunMeifearedthathisyoungerbrotherwasgoingtoconverttoChristianityifhestayedlongerinHawaii.ChristianityandRevolutionSunYat-senhadalreadyabsorbedtoomanyChristianidea
4、s,however.In1883,heandafriendbroketheBeijiEmperor-Godstatueinfrontofhishomevillage'stempleandhadtofleetoHongKong.There,SunreceivedamedicaldegreefromtheHongKongCollegeofMedicine(nowtheUniversityofHongKong).DuringhistimeinHongKong,theyoungmanconvertedtoChristiani
5、ty,tohisfamily'schagrin.ForSunYat-sen,becomingChristianwasasymbolofhisembraceof"modern,"orWestern,knowledgeandideas.ItwasarevolutionarystatementatatimewhentheQingDynastywastryingdesperatelytofendoffwesternization.By1891,Sunhadgivenuphismedicalpracticeandwaswork
6、ingwiththeFurenLiterarySociety,whichadvocatedtheoverthrowoftheQing.HewentbacktoHawaiiin1894torecruitChineseex-patriotstheretotherevolutionarycause,inthenameoftheReviveChinaSociety.The1894-95Sino-JapaneseWarwasadisastrousdefeatfortheQinggovernment,feedingintocal
7、lsforreform.SomereformerssoughtagradualmodernizationofimperialChina,butSunYat-sencalledfortheendoftheempireandtheestablishmentofamodernrepublic.InOctoberof1895,theReviveChinaSocietystagedtheFirstGuangzhouUprisinginanattempttooverthrowtheQing;theirplansleaked,an
