2、ibitaquiteproperconcernwiththeextenttowhichthedeepstructureofcultureisaffectedbysportsglobalization,theygenerallyfailtogivesignificantconsiderationtotheroleofthestate,becauseofexcessiveemphasisonotheraspectsofglobalizationsuchascommercia-lization,comm
3、odificationandculturalhomogenization.Weattempt,there-fore,torefocusontheroleofthestateandtoinvestigateitsrelationshipwithglobalsportbyadoptingthetheoreticalframeworkofHeldetal.(1999)asthemainanalyticaltoolforthisstudy.Bytakingstrategicapproachesinthee
4、conomicandcultural/ideologicalfields,theChinesegovernmenthasdemonstrated,tosomedegree,itscapacitytofindeffectivewaystomanageitsrelationshipwithglobalfootball.Thiswasdemonstratedparticularlybythesettingupofnewgovernmentalcommercialagencies,updatingspor
5、tandfootballregulations,andstrengtheningChinesecommunistideologicaleducation.Muchofthemostinfluentialexistingworkontherelationshipbetweenglobali-zationandsporthaseitherignoredor,atbest,failedtohighlighttheresistantrolethatcanbeplayedbyindividualnation
6、statesandbynationalsports-governingbodies.1TheemphasishastendedtobeonthespreadofWesternprac-ticesandvaluesandonthepossibilityofresistanceintheculturalandeconomicrealms.Thus,ManzenreiterandHornehaveprovidedavaluableserviceintermsofdemonstratinghowWeste
