3、ativetoit—particularlyifonewereevertohopetochangeexistinglanguageconditionsthatdisadvantage,mostoften,minoritygroups.Corsonarticulatedthispositionconsistentlythroughouthiswork(seeMay,2002)andthismightexplainwhythefirstvolumeofthatfirsteditionoftheEncyclopedia,underRuthWodak’seditor
4、ship,beganwiththequestionofthepoliticsoflanguage.UnderNancyHornberger’sGeneralEditorshipofthesecondedition,thisunderstandingandcommitmentremainintact,andthefirstvolumeofthiscurrenteditionagainbeginswithafocusuponthepoliticsoflanguage—highlightingandforegroundingtheimportanceofthes
5、ocialandpoliticalcontextsoflanguagepolicyandlanguageeducation.Andyet,forsome,thismightstillseemsurprising.Afterall,formuchofitshistory,linguisticsasanacademicdiscipline,particularlyinitsmoretrenchantstructuralistforms,hasbeenpreoccupiedwithidealist,abstractedapproachestothestudyo
6、flanguage.Butthisispreciselytheproblem.Languagehastoooftenbeenexaminedinisolationfromthesocialandpoliticalconditionsinwhichitisused,resultinginasyn-chronicor‘presentist’approachtolanguage(Bourdieu,1982,1991;May,2005).AstheFrenchsociologistandsocialanthropologist,PierreBourdieu,co
