3、tagreestosharethesewordssoastoenrichthelivesofothers.Foritiswhentheborderlinebetweenonelanguageandanotheriserased,whenthesocialbarriersbetweenthespeakerofonelanguageandanotherarebroken,thatabridgeisbuilt,connectingwhatwerepreviouslytwoseparatesitesintoonebig
4、spaceforhumaninteraction,and,outofthis,anewworldemergesandanewnationisborn.”PresidentThaboMbeki27August19991.SouthAfricaisacountryofmanylanguagesandtongues.However,ourlanguageshavenotalwaysbeen“workingtogether”.Inthepast,therichnessofourlinguisticdiversitywa
5、susedasaninstrumentofcontrol,oppressionandexploitation.Theexistenceofdifferentlanguageswasrecognisedandperverselycelebratedtolegitimisethepolicyof“separatedevelopment”thatformedthecornerstoneofapartheid.However,inpractice,allourlanguageswerenotaccordedequals
6、tatus.Thepolicyof“separatedevelopment”resultedintheprivilegingofEnglishandAfrikaansastheofficiallanguagesoftheapartheidstateandthemarginalisationandunder-developmentofAfricanandotherlanguages.2.Theuseoflanguagepolicyasaninstrumentofcontrol,oppressionandexplo
7、itationwasoneofthefactorsthattriggeredthetwogreatpoliticalstrugglesthatdefinedSouthAfricainthetwentiethcentury–thestruggleoftheAfrikanersagainstBritishimperialismandthestruggleoftheblackcommunityagainstwhiterule.Indeed,itwastheattemptbytheapartheid2statetoim
8、poseAfrikaansasamediumofinstructioninblackschoolsthatgaverisetothemassstrugglesofthelate1970sand1980s.3.Theroleofallourlanguages“workingtogether”tobuildacommonsenseofnationhoodisconsistentwithth
