3、rseniors,hasbeenquitearecentdevelopmentwhichhasnaturallystimulatedcross-culturalstudiesoffirstnamingindiffer-entcountries.MyownobservationandinvestigationofChinesefirstnamingdemonstratethattherearemoredif-ferencesthansimilaritiesinfirstnamingbetweentheChi-neseandAmericanaddressingsystems.Thispaper
4、at-temptstodrawacross-culturalcomparisonoffirstnamingbetweenChineseandAmericanEnglish.IhavebasedmyresearchfirstonearlierstudiesofaddressformscarriedoutbylinguistssuchasBrownandFord,Ervin-Tril~p,Burling,French,etc.,inAmericanEnglish,andthenonmyownobservationandinvestigationthroughdatacol.lectedfrom
5、modernChinesenovelsandplays,andfromthedailyinteractionbetweenChineseinreallifesitua_tions.Mycomparisonwillfocusonthreeareas:form,us-ageandfunction.FirstNamingAddressFormsFirstnamingaddressformsinChineseandAmericanEng-lisharequitedifferentbecausetheyarederivedfromdissimilarlinguisticsystems.Eachhas
