5、asbeenagrowinginterestinmetaphornotonlyinlinguistics,butalsoinsomeotherdisciplinessuchasphilosophy,psychologyandsociology.Acontemporarytheory,Lakoff’sConceptualMetaphortheory,viewsmetaphornotmerelyasamatteroflanguagebutofthinkingandcognition.Metaphor,accordingtohim,isdefine

6、dasacross-domainmappingintheconceptualsystem.Andmetaphoricalexpressionsinlanguagearethemanifestationoftherealizationofsuchamapping.InspiredbyandbasedontheConceptualMetaphortheory,thisthesisattemptstoexplorethesimilaritiesanddifferencesoftheconceptualmetaphorsofIDEASbetweenE

7、nglishandChinesewiththeunderlyingreasonsfromthecognitiveperspective.Themajorfindingsofthestudyarelistedasfollows:1)wefindthattheconceptofIDEASinEnglishandChineseislargelyconceptualizedthroughmetaphor.ThisresultisentirelyinlinewiththestatementproposedbyLakoffthatmetaphorispe
