3、thegrowingcomplexityandspeedofprojects,andBIM’sincreasingrecognitionasanenabler,catalyst,andfacilitatorofteamcollaboration—alsopresentsignificantchallengesthatcanbeovercomewiththerightapproachandmindset.Atonetime,beinganexpertmeantknowingmorethanone’scompetitorsinaparticularfield.Firmst
4、hatreinforcedtheirexpertculturehoardedinformation,whichresultedinsilosofexpertise.Today,manyfirmsarelookingtohirepeopleperceivedasbuildingandsoftwaretechnologyexperts,shortsightedlyaddressingtoday’sneedsattheexpenseoftomorrow’s.Whilearchitectshavealwaysbeentreeswithmanybranches,ourcurre
5、nteconomicclimatehasdiscouragedthemfrombeinganythingbutpalmtrees:alltrunk,nobranches.Andyetthingschangesoquicklythatthosewhowenttobedexpertsareunlikelytowakeupexpertsinthemorning.Duetothespeedandcomplexityofprojects,wedonothavetimetoacquireknowledgetheoldway—slowly,overtime,throughtradi
6、tionalmeans.Evenwhenwesupplementourbooklearningwithconferences,webinars,andcontinuingeducation,itisimpossibletokeepupwiththeflowofnewinformationinourindustry.Expertisetodayisamuchmoresocial,fluid,anditerativeprocessthanitusedtobe.Beinganexpertisnolongerabouttellingpeoplewhatyouknowsomuc
