5、egeEnglishTestwasadministeredinordertojudgewhetherrelevantcollegeEnglishsyllabuseshadbeeneffectivelyimplemented.Inthefollowingyears,invirtueoftheincreaseofChinasinternationalcommunicationanditseconomicdevelopment,theimportanceofthistesthasbeensoincrediblystrengthe

6、nedthatalmosteveryuniversitystudenthastostudyEnglish,andalargeproportionofthemhavetotakeCET(BandIVorBandVI)andpassitasaprerequisiteofbeingconferredtheacademicdegree.SomeexpertsinsistthatcollegeEnglishteachinginChinahasmade“considerableprogress”as6.75millionunivers

7、itystudentshavepassedCET2Band4,and2.06millionhavepassedCET2Band6sincethetestcameout(Yang2004).Thesefigures,however,cannotbequotedtoshowthatcollegestudentspEnglishabilityhasbeenlargelyimprovedsincepassingCETdoesnotnecessarilymeanthatthestudentshaveacquiredthebasicl

8、anguageskillsduetoobviousdefectsofthetest,andcomparedwithalltheenrolleduniversitystudentsinthoseyears,thestudentswhopassedCETonlytakeupaverysmallproport
