2、gidgrainsjoinedbydeformableandbreakablecementatgrain-graincontacts)towhichlarger-scalejointscanbeaddedandwhosemechanicalbehaviorissimulatedbythedistinct-elementmethodusingthetwo-andthree-dimensionaldiscontinuumprogramsPFC2DandPFC3D.Themicromechanicalprocessesthatcontrolbrittlefractureandthus,sho

3、uldinformanymicromechanicalmodel,aresummarized.Therichvarietyofmicrostructuralmodelsthatcanbeproducedbythebonded-particlemodelingmethodologyaredescribedandclassifiedwithrespecttotheirmicrostructuralandlarger-scalefeatures.Thesemodelsprovideawiderangeofrockbehaviorsthatencompassbothcompactandporo

4、usrockatbothanintactandrock-massscale,andexamplesareprovidedofhowBPMsarebeingusedtomodelrockatthesescales.Theexamplesincludeanintactanisotropicmaterialthatmayswellandcontractinresponsetochangesinsaturation,thebehavioroftwoalternativeBPMsthatcanmatchboththeuniaxialandtensilestrengthsofcompactrock
