3、ny’Grenfell,withwhomhefellalmostimmediatelyinloveandmarriedin1844.In1842,CharlesleftforCambridgetoreadforHolyOrdersatMagdaleneCollege.Hewasoriginallyintendedforthelegalprofession,butchangedhismindandchosetopursueaministryinthechurch.From1844,hewasrectorofEversleyinHampshire,andin1860,hew
4、asappointedRe-giusProfessorofModernHistoryattheUniversityofCambridge.In1869Kingsleyresignedhisprofessorshipandfrom1870to1873hewasacanonofChesterCathedral.WhileinChesterhefoundedtheChesterSo-cietyforNaturalScience,LiteratureandArtwhichplayedanimportantpartintheestablishmentoftheGrosvenorM
5、useum.In1872heacceptedthePresidencyoftheBirminghamandMidlandInstituteandbecameits19thPresident.Kingsleydiedin1875andwasburiedinStMary'sChurchyardinEversley.InpersonCharlesKingsleywastallandspare,sinewyratherthanpowerful,andofarestlessexcitabletemperament.Hiscomplexionwasswarthy,hishairda
6、rk,andhiseyebrightandpier-cing.Histemperwashot,keptunderrigidcontrol;hisdispositiontender,gentleandloving,withflashingscornandindignationagainstallthatwasignobleandimpure;hewasagoodhusband,fatherandfriend.Oneofhisdaughters,MaryStLegerKingsley(MrsHarrison),becamewellknownasanovelistundert
