3、nthetemperaturerangebetweenT=823and913Kforvarioustimesupto120h.Duetoannealing,Fe2Al5isproducedasalayerattheFe/Alinterfaceinthediffusioncouple.AlthoughFeAl,FeAl2andFeAl3arealsostableintermetalliccompoundsinthistemperaturerange,thesecompoundswerenotrecognizedinthediffusioncouplewithintheexperimental
4、annealingtimes.ThemeanthicknessoftheFe2Al5layerisproportionaltothesquarerootoftheannealingtime,andgraingrowthoccursintheFe2Al5layer.ThismeansthatthegrowthoftheFe2Al5layeriscontrolledbythevolumediffusionoftheconstituentelementsineachphase.Onthebasisoftheobservationforthegrowthrate,wemayestimatethat
5、theinterdiffusioncoefficientisaboutoneorderofmagnitudesmallerforFe2Al5thanforAlbutmorethanthreeordersofmagnitudegreaterforFe2Al5thanforFe.Ifnucleationoccurssufficientlyfastforallthecompounds,theinterdiffusioncoefficientshouldbemorethantwoordersofmagnitudesmallerforFeAl,FeAl2andFeAl3thanforFe2Al5.©200
