3、dherewascarriedout.AbstractCategorizationisafundamentalpropertyofhumancognition.Thisarticlepresentsasummaryofrecentresearchthathasre-examinedthenatureoflinguisticandnon-linguisticcolorcategoriesandtherelationshipbetweenthem.Improvementsinexperimentalparadigm
4、scombinedwithabetterunderstandingoftherelationshipbetweenphysiologyandhigher-levelcognitionhaveledtoaclearerunderstandingofthecomplexitiesoftherelationshipbetweenculture,language,cognitionandperception.Itisconcludedthatpossessionoflinguisticcolorcategoriesfa
5、cilitatesrecognitionandinfluencesperceptualjudgments,eveninlanguageswithtermsthatarelessabstractthanEnglish.Cognitivecategoriesforcolorappeartobetightlytiedtothelinguistictermsusedtodescribethem.INTRODUCTIONDespitemorethanfiftyyearsofinvestigation,theissueof
6、whether,andtowhatdegree,languagemightinfluencethoughtisstillhotlydebated.Thedomainofcolorcategorizationhasbeenputforwardbothasanextremecaseoflinguisticinfluenceoncognition(e.g.Brown&Lenneberg,1954;Ratner,1989)andthereverse–aninstanceofthecompleteindependence
7、ofthoughtandlanguage(e.g.Bornstein,1985).Asecond,related,issueisthequestionofwhethercolorterminologies‘evolve’naturallytoanoptimumpointforcommunicativeanddescriptivepurposes.Thisissuehasbeenaddressedinanumberofstudies(Berlin&Kay,1969;Kay,Berlin&Merrifield,19
8、91;Kuschel&Monberg,1974;Levinson,1997)butisnotconsideredhere.Manylanguageshavebeendocumentedtouseadditional‘borrowed’termsfromotherlanguagesandallmayrapidlyexpandtheircolorvocabularywhenfirstthe
