5、equenthardeningofAmericanpoliticalrhetoric.Andyet,thesuddenincreaseofconsensuscatalysedbyGeorgeW.Bushandtheconsequencesofhisinternationalpolicybringhismoduspersuadendiupfordiscussion.Theaimofthisarticleistopresentaframeworkforametaphor-basedcriticalanalysisofpersuasioninpoliticaldiscourse.Ourobj

6、ectofobservationisGeorgeW.Bush’spublicspeechestothenation(2001–4).Morespecifically,theanalysisisfocusedonthepersuasionstrategyenactedtopromotethepreventivewarinIraq.Inourapproach,conceptualmetaphorasrelatedtoemotionconstitutesthefundamentalargumentativefeatureandcrucialtooltoaddressthematterofpe

7、rsuasionintext,contributingtoidentifyingboththeideologicalrootandthepersuasivestrategyofagivendiscourseinthelongrun.Synthesisofourresultsshowsthepotentialitiesofmetaphorasaprivilegedcognitivetoolforabstractingandconstructing
