2、al(2002).Ourinterestinthisvolumeisnottotrytodemonstratethatdiscourseandtechnologyliveinasymbioticrelationship.OurinterestisinpresentingaselectedsetofpapersfromtheGeorgetownUniversityRoundTable2002(GURT2002),whichopenedupadiscus-sionamongdiscourseanalystsandothersinlinguisticsandinrelatedfields

3、aboutthetwofoldimpactofnewcommunicationtechnologies:Theimpactonhowwecollect,transcribe,andanalyzediscoursedata,and,possiblymoreimportant,theimpactonsocialinteractionsanddiscoursesthemselvesthatthesetechnologiesarehaving.Discourseanalysisaswenowknowitisinmanywaystheproductoftechnolog-icalchange

4、.Atthetimeoftheepoch-making1981GURT(Tannen1982),DeborahTannenchoseashertheme“Analyzingdiscourse:Textandtalk.”Discourseanalysiswasjustthenemergingasasubjectoflinguisticresearch.Thepapersinthatconfer-enceandinthatvolumewereaboutequallydividedbetweenstudiesoftext(dis-courseintheformofwrittenorpri

5、ntedlanguage)andtalk(discourseintheformofspokenlanguagecapturedinsitubymeansofthetaperecorder).AsFrederickEricksonhasnoted,small,inexpensivecassettetaperecordersmadeitpossibletocapturelanguageinuseinawaythatwasprohibitivelydifficultbeforethe1960s.HewasoneoftheveryfewatGURT1981whowasalreadyusin

6、gsoundfilminhisresearch.Nowweareseeingtheproliferationofcommunicationtechnologiesfrompalm-sizeddigitalvideorecorderstocellphonesandchatroomsontheInternet.Journalsaregoingonline,andthesesarebeingsubmittedinmultime-diaformats.Theterm“multimodality”iscomingtobeusedacrossmanyfieldswithinwhichlingu

7、istsworktoencompassthesemanynewtechnologicalchanges.Itwasourgoalinthisfifty-thirdannualconferenceatGeorgetownUniversity’sDe-partmentofLinguisticstobringtogetherscholarsworkinginavarietyoffieldsandinsubdisciplinesoflinguisticsbothtoasses
