2、tropicnetworks.comAbstract—ThispaperevaluatesthesuitabilityofBackwarduseontheInternet.Morerecently,ExplicitCongestionNotifi-ExplicitCongestionNotification(BECN)forIPnetworks.Thecation(ECN)wasproposedforTCP/IPnetworksasameansofBECNmechanismhaspreviouslybeenusedinnon-IPnetworks,explicitlynotifyingend-h

3、ostsofnetworkcongestionbymark-buttherehasbeenlimitedexperimentalinvestigationintotheap-ing,insteadofdroppingpackets[11].RecentstudiesshowthatplicationoftheBECNschemeascongestioncontrolmechanisminIPnetworks.Inthispaper,weconsideranenhancedalgo-REDwithECNsupportgivesdefiniteimprovementintimede-rithmfo

4、rBECNwhichusesInternetControlMessageProtocollaysforinteractivetrafficoverpacketdropschemes[9][19].(ICMP)SourceQuenchesforbackwardcongestionnotificationinInthispaper,weexamineuseofaBackwardExplicitCon-IPnetworksandundertakecomparativeperformanceevaluationgestionNotification(BECN)mechanismtoinformthesen

5、derofRED,ECNandourenhancedBECNmechanismusingbothofthecongestionsituationinthenetwork.Thismecha-long-livedTCPbulktransfersandshort-livedwebtrafficwork-loads.Ourresultsshowthatforwebtrafficworkloads,BECNof-nismusesInternetControlMessageProtocol(ICMP)Sourcefersonlyslightimprovementintransferdelaywhileav

6、eragegood-Quenchesforbackwardnotification.TheICMPSourceQuenchputforbulktransfersisnoworsethanthatofECN.Forpathsthat(ISQ)messagingwasoriginallystandardizedasthemecha-haveahighbandwidthdelayproductourresultsshowthatnotnismofchoicefornotifyinganendhostofnetworkcongestiononlycanBECNoffersignificantimprov
