5、theBuddha.Thesagestaughthumanity,timeandagain,thatmaterialgainalonewillnotfulfillourdeepestneeds.Materiallifemustbeharnessedtomeetthesehumanneeds,mostimportantlytopromotetheendofsuffering,socialjustice,andtheattainmentofhappiness.Thechallengeisrealforallpartsoftheworld.Asonekey
6、example,theworld’seconomicsuperpower,theUnitedStates,hasachievedstrikingeconomicandtechnologicalprogressoverthepasthalfcenturywithoutgainsintheself-reportedhappinessofthecitizenry.Instead,uncertaintiesandanxietiesarehigh,socialandeconomicinequalitieshavewidenedconsiderably,soci
7、altrustisindecline,andconfidenceingovernmentisatanall-timelow.Perhapsforthesereasons,lifesatisfactionhasremainednearlyconstantduringdecadesofrisingGrossNationalProduct(GNP)percapita.Therealitiesofpoverty,anxiety,environmentaldegradation,andunhappinessinthemidstofgreatplentyshou
