5、themfromtheperspectivesofstylistics,SystemicFunctionalLinguistics(beforetheappearanceofAppraisalTheory)andCriticalDiscourseAnalysis.ThepresentresearchtriestoconductacomparativestudyofChineseandUnitedStates(U.S.)leaders’speechesatuniversitiesinintercu

6、lturalcontextsfromtheperspectiveofdialogiccontractionwithinEngagement(theengagementsystem).Engagementisconcernedwiththeresourceswhichthespeaker/writeremploystoexpresshis/herstanceinthebackdropofdifferentalternativevoicesandtonegotiatewiththepotential
