2、ieces”oftheCommunistPartyunchangedfromtheMaoistera,downplaysthetremendouschangesinthemediasince1978.Thesecondview,holdingthattheyareincreasinglybecoming“American-styleprofessionals,”overstatestheinfluenceofinter-nationalmedianormsonChinesenewsworkers’day-to-dayreality.WhilesuchcommunistandAmeri

3、can-styleprofessionalsdoexistincontemporaryChina,botharefarlessinfluentialandnumerousthanstereotypeswouldsuggest.Exclusivescholarlyfocusonthesegroupsignorestwoothermorenumerousandinfluentialorientations:“advocateprofessionals,”thosewhowritetoinfluenceopinionandpolicy,and“workadayjournalists,”wh

4、oworkmainlyformoneyandlackacommitmenttopublicservice.ThisarticledelineatesallfourtypesofChinesejournalistandexplainswhyanunderstandingofthelattertwoprofessionalorientationsiscriticaltounderstandingChina’smedia,politicsandsociety.Keywords:Chinesemedia;journalism;professionalization;politicaladvo
