3、,innovationintheinfrastructure(e.g.energymanagement,packing),andre-thinkinghowtointerconnectthousandsofcom-modityPCs.Inthischapter,wefocusonthelatterandreviewdevelopmentsthataretakenplaceinarchitectingdatacenternetworks(DCN)tomeettherequire-mentsofthecloud.Finally,wespeculateont

4、hepotentialimpactsofsuchutilitycomputingdevelopmentsinshapingthefutureInternetbydrivingincentivesofadoptionofnewprotocolsandarchitecturalchanges.1IntroductionIncontrasttotraditionalenterpriseDCsbuiltfromhigh-prize“scale-up”hardwaredevicesandservers,cloudserviceDCsconsistoflow-co

5、stcommodityserversthat,inlargenumbersandwithappropriatesoftwaresupport(e.g.virtualization),matchtheperformanceandreliabilityoftraditionalapproachesatafractionofthecost.However,thenetworkingfabricwithinthedatacenterhasnotevolved(yet)tothesamelevelsofcommoditization[1].Today’sDCsu

6、seexpensiveenterprise-classnetworkingequipmentthatrequiretediousnetworkandITmanagementpracticestoprovideefficientInternet-scaledatacenterservices.ConsolidatedonconvergedIP/Ethernettechnologies,currentDCNsareconstrainedbythetradi-tionalL2/L3hierarchicalorganizationwhichhampersthe

7、agilitytodynamicallyassignservicesprovidedbyvirtualmachines(VM)toanyavailablephysicalserver.Moreover,IPsubnettingandVLANfragmentationendupyieldingpoorserver-to-servercapacityevenwhenrelyingonexpensiveequipmentattheupperlayersofthehierarchy[7].ResourceusageinthehighlyvirtualizedC
