2、orethanamarketingumbrella,encompassingtopicssuchasdistributedcomputing,gridcomputing,utilitycomputing,andsoftware-as-a-service,thathavealreadyreceivedsignificantresearchfocusandcommercialimplementation.Nonetheless,thereexistanincreasingnumberoflargecompaniestha
3、tareofferingcloudcomputinginfrastructureproductsandservicesthatdonotentirelyresemblethevisionsoftheseindividualcompo-nenttopics.Inthisarticlewediscussthelimitationsandopportunitiesofdeployingdatamanagementissuesontheseemergingcloudcomputingplatforms(e.g.,Amazo
4、nWebServices).Wespeculatethatlargescaledataanalysistasks,decisionsupportsystems,andapplicationspecificdatamartsaremorelikelytotakeadvantageofcloudcomputingplatformsthanoperational,transactionaldatabasesystems(atleastinitially).WepresentalistoffeaturesthataDBMSd
5、esignedforlargescaledataanalysistasksrunningonanAmazon-styleofferingshouldcontain.Wethendiscusssomecurrentlyavailableopensourceandcommercialdatabaseoptionsthatcanbeusedtoperformsuchanalysistasks,andconcludethatnoneoftheseoptions,aspresentlyarchitected,matchthe
6、requisitefeatures.WethusexpresstheneedforanewDBMS,designedspecificallyforcloudcomputingenvironments.1IntroductionThoughnoteveryoneagreesontheexactdefinitionofcloudcomputing[32],mostagreethevisionencompassesageneralshiftofcomputerprocessing,storage,andsoftwaredel
7、iveryawayfromthedesktopandlocalservers,acrossthenetwork,andintonextgenerationdatacentershostedbylargeinfrastructurecompaniessuchasAmazon,Google,Yahoo,Microsoft,orSun.Justastheelectricgridrevolutionizedaccesstoelectricityonehundredyearsago,freeingcorporationsfr
8、omhavingtogeneratetheirownpower,andenablingthemtofocusontheirbusinessdifferentiators,cloudcomputingishailedasrevolutionizingIT,freeingcorporationsfromlargeITcapitalinvestments,ande
