2、ndguidanceinboththepublicandprivatesectorsinthefieldsofbothaudiologyandhearingaiddispensing,andthroughconsultationwithabroadrangeofprofessionals.Theaimofthisguidanceistoensuresafepracticewhilemaintaininganddevelopinganimprovedandtimeouspatientjourney.Inparti

3、cular,itrecognisesthatinsomeinstancesENTreferralwillbeindicatedbutitisimportanttonotethatthisshouldnot,inmostcases,impedetheprogressofthepatientthroughthereferralprocess,especiallywherethelikelyoutcomeishearingaidprovision.Theeffectiveuseofdirectreferralwill

4、relyongoodcommunicationandworkingrelationships,inparticularbetweenlocalaudiologyandENTservices.Itshouldalsoberecognisedthat,whiletheoutcomeofadirectreferralmayrequireanENTopinion,thisopinionmaynotalwaysrequireaformalout-patientENTconsultation.Careistherefore

5、requiredtoensurethatpatientsunderstandthattheymayinsomeinstances(butnotall)receiveanENTappointmentifthecircumstanceswarrantit.Someparametersoftheguidancearesetlocally,inparticularagerestrictions.Agelimitsarenotdiscriminatoryinanyway.Rathertheyensurethatthose

6、whopresentwithhearingproblemsareseenbythemostappropriatehealthcareprofessionalandhavetheirhearinglossinvestigatedandmanagedinaseffectiveandtimelyawayaspossible.Somelocalinterpretationanddevelopmentofthisguidanceisexpectedbutfeedbackfromallusersisappreciateda
