2、tasacementingagentinpavementsisthemostcommonofitsapplications,however,andtheonethatwillbeconsideredhere.Asphaltproductsareusedtoproduceflexiblepavementsforhighwaysandairports.Theterm“flexible”isusedtodistinguishthesepavementsfromthosemadewithPortlandcemen
3、t,whichareclassifiedasrigidpavements,thatis,havingbeamstrength.Thisdistinctionisimportantbecauseitprovidestheykeytothedesignapproachwhichmustbeusedforsuccessfulflexiblepavementstructures.Theflexiblepavementclassificationmaybefurtherbrokendownintohighandlo
4、wtypes,thetypeusuallydependingonwhetherasolidorliquidasphaltproductisused.Thelowtypesofpavementaremadewiththecutback,oremulsion,liquidproductsandareverywidelyusedthroughoutthiscountry.Descriptiveterminologyhasbeendevelopedinvarioussectionsofthecountrytoth
5、eextentthatonepavementtypemayhaveseveralnames.However,thegeneralprocessfollowedinconstructionissimilarformostlow-typepavementsandcanbedescribedasoneinwhichtheaggregateandtheasphaltproductareusuallyappliedtotheroadbedseparatelyandtheremixedorallowedtomix,f
