3、tationofDreamsuntouched.WhenIwrotethisbookin1899therewasasyetno"sexualtheory,"andtheanalysisofthemorecomplicatedformsofthepsychoneuroseswasstillinitsinfancy.Theinterpretationofdreamswasintendedasanexpedienttofacilitatethepsychologicalanalysisoftheneuroses;butsincethenaprof
4、ounderunderstandingoftheneuroseshascontributedtowardsthecomprehensionofthedream.Thedoctrineofdream-interpretationitselfhasevolvedinadirectionwhichwasinsufficientlyemphasizedinthefirsteditionofthisbook.Frommyownexperience,andtheworksofStekelandotherwriters,*Ihavesincelearne
5、dtoappreciatemoreaccuratelythesignificanceofsymbolismindreams(orrather,inunconsciousthought).Inthecourseofyears,amassofdatahasaccumulatedwhichdemandsconsideration.Ihaveendeavoredtodealwiththeseinnovationsbyinterpolationsinthetextandfootnotes.Iftheseadditionsdonotalwaysquit
6、eadjustthemselvestotheframeworkofthetreatise,oriftheearliertextdoesnoteverywherecomeuptothestandardofourpresentknowledge,Imustbegindulgenceforthisdeficiency,sinceitisonlytheresultandindicationoftheincreasinglyrapidadvanceofourscience.Iwillevenventuretopredictthedirectionsi
