6、gistshasfocussedonparticularsubsectorsratherthanonnonprofitsasaclass.Thisreviewattemptstoextractfromalargeandvariedliteratureadistinctivelysociologicalperspectiveonnonprofits,whichitcontraststoinfluentialworkineconomics.Twoquestions-"Why(andwhere)aretherenonprofitorganiz
7、ations"and"Whatdifferencedoesnonprofitnessmake?"-areaddressedatthelevelsoforganization,industry,andfirm.Threecentralconclusions,eachwithre-searchimplications,emergefromthisreview:(a)Theoriginsandbehaviorofnonprofitorganizationsreflectinstitutionalfactorsandstatepoliciesa
