3、”news,becauseanyeventintheinternationalareahasalocalreactioninmanpowerdraft,ineconomicstrain,interms,indeed,ofourverywayoflife. Thereisinjournalismawidespreadviewthatwhenyouembarkoninterpretation,youareenteringchoppyanddangerouswaters,theswirlingtidesofopinion.This
4、isnonsense. Theopponentsofinterpretationinsistthatthewriterandtheeditorshallconfinehimselftothe“facts”.Thisinsistenceraisestwoquestions:Whatarethefacts?And:Arethebarefactsenough? Astothefirstquery.Considerhowaso-called“factual”storyconesabout.Thereportercollects,s
5、ay,fiftyfacts;outofthesefifty,hisspaceallotmentbeingnecessarilyrestricted,heselectstheten,whichheconsidersmostimportant.ThisisJudgmentNumberOne.Thenheorhiseditordecideswhichofthesetenfactsshallconstitutetheleadofthepiece(Thisisimportantdecisionbecausemanyreadersdono
