2、onfrontingAmericanjournalism—tomakecleartothereadertheproblemsoftheday,tomakeinternationalnewsasunderstandableascommunitynews,torecognizethatthereisnolongeranysuchthing(withthepossibleexceptionofsuchscribblingassocietyandclubnews)as“local”news,becauseanyeventintheinternationalareahasalocalreac
3、tioninmanpowerdraft,ineconomicstrain,interms,indeed,ofourverywayoflife. Thereisinjournalismawidespreadviewthatwhenyouembarkoninterpretation,youareenteringchoppyanddangerouswaters,theswirlingtidesofopinion.Thisisnonsense. Theopponentsofinterpretationinsistthatthewriterandtheeditorshallconfine
4、himselftothe“facts”.Thisinsistenceraisestwoquestions:Whatarethefacts?And:Arethebarefactsenough? Astothefirstquery.Considerhowaso-called“factual”storyconesabout.Thereportercollects,say,fiftyfacts;outofthesefifty,hisspaceallotmentbeingnecessarilyrestricted,heselectstheten,whichheconsidersmostim
5、portant.ThisisJudgmentNumberOne.Thenheorhiseditordecideswhichofthesetenfactsshallconstitutetheleadofthepiece(Thisisimportantdecisionbecausemanyreadersdonotproceedbeyondthefirstparagraph.)ThisisJudgmentNumberTwo.Thenthenighteditordetermineswhetherthearticleshallbepresentedonpageone,whereithasal
