Impressions of Pride and Prejudice"It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must in need of a wife ."TheopeningsentenceofPride and Prejudiceleftdeepimpressiononreadersalmosttwocenturiesago.JaneAusten'staleofloveandeconomicsreachesusoncemorewiththeenergyofathoroughnovelty."PrideandPrejudice"hasbeenafavoritenovelofminesinceIfirstreaditandI'veseenLaurenceOlivierandGreerGarson,ColinFirthandJenniferEhleandnowMatthewMacFadyenandKieraKnightly.Thatmoviehassuchastrongappealtome,Iwastotallyobsessedbyit.AmazinglyenoughI'veneverbeendisappointed.Thematerialseemstobefullproof.ColinFirth'sDarcy,inmanyways,istheDarcyI'vealwaysimagined.He'sbeenanactorI'vefollowedfeverishlysincehisgloriousAdrianLeDucin"ApartmentZero",MatthewMacFadyenwastotallynewtomebuthemanagedtocreatethatsenseoflongingthatmakesthatfinalpayoffsosatisfying.KieraKnightlyisaravishingrevelation.Imustconfess,Ididn'tremotelyimaginedthatshewascapableofthepowerfulrangeshebrilliantlyshowshere.TheotherbigsurpriseisJoeWright,thedirector,inhisfeaturefilmdebutwhichismorethanpromising,it'sextraordinary.Thephotography,theartdirectionandthespectacularsupportingcast,inparticularDonaldSutherlandandBrendaBlethyn, makesthisnewversionofaperennialclassicamemorableeveningatthemoviesThenIfindthebook“Pride and Prejudice”immediatelyandreaditoverandoveragain.It’soneofmyfavoritebooks.AndIjustcan’twaitaminutetoexpressmyfeelingaboutit.I searched the Internet and found something about the author Jane Austen.AstheauthorofPride and Prejudice,JaneAustenwasoneofthefamousrealisticwritersintheEnglishliteratureinnineteenthcentury. Her novels were witty, warm and ironic portraits of the privilege classes of 18th- and 19th-century England. Her best-known works are Emma (1815), Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Sense and Sensibility (1811).Pride and Prejudice is one of the representative works of Jane Austen, first published in 1813. Though the story's setting is characteristically turn-of-the-19th-century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of 'most loved books.Icouldn'tforgethoweagerMrs.Bennetwantstomarryoffherdaughters.Ifyouwanttoknowwhysheissocrazyaboutthesethings,ImustmentionthesituationinBritainatthattime.Onlytheeldestsonhadtheprivilegeofinheritinghisfather'spossessions.Youngersonsanddaughterswhoareusedtoluxuriousliveshavenochoicebutmarryamanorwomaninpossessionofalargefortunetocontinuetheircomfortablelives.Thus,wecanseethatgettingmarriedisawayto becomewealthier,particularlyforwomenwithoutmanypossessions.JaneAustentoldusthatmoneyandpossessiondeterminedeverything,includingmarriageandloveinhercentury.In“PrideandPrejudice”,thesisterofMr.BingleystronglyopposedhisplanofmarryingJanebecausetheBennetsdon'thavemanypossessionsandtheirsocialpositionsaremuchlowerthanthem.Fromthis,wecanseetherearealotofobstaclesforanotveryrichwomantomarryawealthyhusband.Thesociety,therelativeswouldnotallowthemtogetmarriage.Inmodernsociety,althoughthemarriagesofeconomicneedshavedecreasedrapidly,theconceptof“moneydetermineseverything”isstildinsomepeople'smind.Alotofparentstryhardtointerferetheirchildren'smarriages.Educationbackground,possessions,jobsremainsthemainreasonthatmayinfluenceone'smarriage.Marryformoneyisstillabigprobleminoursociety.Wecan'thelpthinking:canmoneydetermineeverything?Thenlet’scometotalkaboutthemeaningfultopicofthislovestory: Prideandprejudiceareourcommonproblemsandweaknesses.Infact,everyoneisveryeasytobedrivenbyhisownsubjectiveimpressionandthuseasytomakeincorrectcommentsonothers,andthenledtomisunderstandbetweenpeople.One’sfirstimpressioncanaffectalotofthingsforsure,butitdoesn’tmeanitcouldn’tbechanged.Thedeeperyougettounderstandsomeone,themoreobjectivepointsyouwill haveonhimorher.ThechangingofElizabeth’spointofviewtowardsDarcyjustprovedthisperfectly:nopride,noprejudice,andthesetwomarriedjustbecausetheyloveeachother,justbecausetheyneedeachotherinsteadofneedeachother’spossessions.Austenissmart,becauseElizabethgotbeautyandintelligencewhileDarcyishandsomeandrich.Ievenwonderifsuchaperfectmarriagecouldtakeplaceinmodernsociety. Inbrief,afterreadingthisstory,manyfeelingscometome.Atthesametime,Istronglyrecommendeveryuniversitystudentstoreadthisclassicalbookandthenthinktwiceaboutthiseternalsubject:onlove,whichfactoristhatshouldbeinthefirstplace?InPride and Prejudice,JaneAustenwrotefourtypesofmarriage:dealElizabethandDarcy,realizableCharlotteandCollins,felicitousJaneandBingley,unhappyLydiaandWickham.Shepointedoutemphaticallyeconomicconsiderationisthebondsofwedlockandlove.Shesaidmarriageisnotdeterminedbypropertyandfamilystatus;it’sunwisetomarrywithoutmoney,butitiswrongtomarryformoney;themarriagesettledbyloveishappyandideal.
