2、artofalargeandclose-knitfamilylocatedonthelowerfringesofEnglishgentry.Shewaseducatedprimarilybyherfatherandolderbrothersaswellasthroughherownreading.Austen'sartisticapprenticeshiplastedfromherteenageyearsuntilshewasaboutthirty-fiveyearsold.Duringthisperiod,shewrotethreemajornovelsa

3、ndbeganafourth.From1811until1815,withthereleaseofSenseandSensibility(1811),PrideandPrejudice(1813),MansfieldPark(1814)andEmma(1815),sheachievedsuccessasapublishedwriter.Shewrotetwoadditionalnovels,NorthangerAbbey(writtenin1798and1799andrevisedlater)andPersuasion,bothpublishedafterh

4、erdeathin1817,andbeganathird(eventuallytitledSanditon),butdiedbeforecompletingit.Duringherlifetime,Austen'sworksbroughtherlittlefameandonlyafewpositivereviews.Throughthemid-nineteenthcentury,hernovelswereadmiredonlybyaliteraryelite.However,thepublicationofhernephew'sAMemoiroftheLif

5、eofJaneAusten,in1870,introducedherlifeandworkstoawiderpublic.Bythe1940s,Austenwasfirmlyensconcedinacademiaasa"greatEnglishwriter",andthesecondhalfofthetwentiethcenturysawaproliferationofAustenscholarshipthatexploredmanyaspectsofhernovels:artistic,ideological,andhistorical.Currently
