3、s,consistingoflotsofcomponents.Asfarastheautomateddesignofsuchsystemsisconcerned,methodsfordesigningtimereducingandlimitingthecomplexityofthetaskaresoughtoutandapplied.Amethodofthekindisconnectedwiththedecompositionandhierarchyprinciples.Thedecompositionofthesystemsisrealized
4、inaway,whichdifferentiatesfunctionallyindependentmodules.Adigitalsystemcanbedescribedasamodulewithinputsand/oroutputs.Theelectricalvaluesontheoutputsaresomefunctionofthevaluesontheinputs.Onewayofdescribingthefunctionofamoduleistodescribehowitiscomposedofsub-modules.Eachofthes
5、ub-modulesisaninstanceofsomeentity,andtheportsoftheinstancesareconnectedusingsignals.Thiskindofdescriptioniscalledastructuraldescription.Inmanycases,itisnotappropriatetodescribeamodulestructurally.Onesuchcaseisamodule,whichisatthebottomofthehierarchyofsomeotherstructuraldescr
6、iption.Forexample,ifyouaredesigningasystemusingICpackagesboughtfromanICshop,youdonotneedtodescribetheinternalstructureofanIC.Insuchcases,adescriptionofthefunctionperformedbythemoduleisrequired,withoutreferencetoitsactualinternalstructure.Suchadescriptioniscalledafunctionalorb
