2、essthesequestions,thepaperisorganizedintwoparts.Inthefirstpart,thedefinitionofauthenticmaterialsisgiven.Thenadvantagesanddisadvantagesoftheuseofauthenticmaterialsarediscussed.Inthesecondpart,thedefinitionofcultureisgivenandthen,whyandhowculturalcontentshouldbeusedisdiscussed.In
3、troductionTheuseofauthenticmaterialsinanEFLclassroomiswhatmanyteachersinvolvedinforeignlanguageteachinghavediscussedinrecentyears.WehaveheardpersuasivevoicesinsistingthattheEnglishpresentedintheclassroomshouldbeauthentic,notproducedforinstructionalpurposes.Generally,whatthismea
4、nsismaterialswhichinvolvelanguagenaturallyoccurringascommunicationinnative-speakercontextsofuse,orratherthoseselectedcontextswherestandardEnglishisthenorm:realnewspaperreports,forexample,realmagazinearticles,realadvertisements,cookingrecipes,horoscopes,etc.Mostoftheteachersthro
5、ughouttheworldagreethatauthentictextsormaterialsarebeneficialtothelanguagelearningprocess,butwhatislessagreediswhenauthenticmaterialsshouldbeintroducedandhowtheyshouldbeusedinanEFLclassroom.AuthenticMaterials:DefinitionThedefinitionsofauthenticmaterialsareslightlydifferentinlit
6、erature.Whatiscommoninthesedefinitionsis'exposuretoreallanguageanditsuseinitsowncommunity'.Rogers(1988)definesitas'appropriate'and'quality'intermsofgoals,objectives,learnerneedsandinterestand'natural'intermsofreallifeandmeaningfulcommunication(p.467).Harmer(1991),citedinMatsuta
7、(n.d.,para.1)definesauthentictextsasmaterialswhicharedesignedfornativespeakers;theyarerealtext;designednotforlanguagestudents,butforthespeakersofthelanguage.Jordan(1997,p.113)referstoauthentictextsastextsthatarenotwrittenforlanguageteachingpurposes.Authenticmaterialsissignifica
