4、rbalconversationandinliterature.ItisanintriguinglanguagephenomenonintheChineselanguage.Theyplaysuchanimportantrolethatatranslatorcannotaffordtoneglectthem.1.2HistoricaloverviewofthestudiesonXiehouyuManyaChinesescholarshasconductedalargevarietyofresearchesonvarious
5、aspectsofXhyandhasscoredgreatachievement.Inthewinterof1920,acommitteewasestablishedforthestudyofChinesefolksycultureinBeiJingUniversity(北大歌谣研究会).SincethenXhy,asaformoffolksyculture,cametoscholars’attention.Especiallyduringthe1930s,therewasaheateddebateoverthenamef
6、orthistypeofcommonsayings.NowpeoplegenerallyagreedtonamethemasXiehouyuinChinese,basedontheirspecialformationandusage1.CurrentlytherearealsosplitedopinionsovertheEnglishtranslationforXhy.Therearesuggestionssuchas“ChineseQuiz-Cracks”,“Chinesefolkwisecracks”and“Chine
