2、eforethelate1960s,approachestoforeignlanguageteachinghadbeenemphasizingonlanguagestructure,thatis,tolearnasecondlanguagethroughthegraspingofgrammar.However,withtheemergenceofCommunicativeApproachinthe1970s,teachersnolongerfeeliteffectivetoteachlanguageasasimplearrangementof
3、“meaningless”parts,nordotheyfeelitimportanttoteachtheexternalmeasuresofcorrectness.Theyarguethatlanguagemaybelearnedasatoolforcommunication,notasanacademicsubjectfocusedongrammar.Therefore,alexicalchunkapproachmightbefeasible.ThisapproachisproposedbyMichaelLewis.Hearguestha
4、tlanguageconsistsnotofvocabularyandstructures,butessentiallyofdifferentkindsoflexicalitems(Lewis,1993).Widdowsonarguesthat“thestructuralapproachaccountsforoneaspectofcompetencebyconcentratingonanalysisbutdoessoattheexpenseofaccess,whereascommunicativeapproachconcentratesona
5、ccesstotherelativeneglectofanalysis”(Widdowson,1989).Undertheseconditions,whatweneedisanapproachthatprovidessomesortsofmiddleground,whichnotonlyemphasizesgrammaticalstructurebutalsopaysmoreattentiontolanguageuse.TheLexicalChunkApproachisanewemergingteachingtheorywhichisbase
6、dontheideathatforeignlanguageteachingshouldfocusonapplication.Lexicalchunksareprefabricatedchunkswhichcanbestoredandretrievedasawholefrommemorywhenneeded.Alexicalchunkisacombinationofgrammar,27semanticandcontext,whichisconsideredasanidealunitforteachinglanguage.Thefundament
7、alprincipleoftheLexicalChunkApproachis“languageconsistsofgrammaticalizedlexis,notlexicalizedgrammar”(Lewis,1993).Accordingtostatisticsanalysisofauthenticmaterialsrecently,90%ofnaturalspeechesarerealizedbymeansofprefabricatedchunksbetweenwordsandfixedphrases,andalllearnersha
