2、sarethevisualphenomenaorperceptionsofpeoplewhendistinguishingtheshape,structureandsizeoftheobjectfromothers.Whileunderthedifferentculturalbackgrounds,theyareendowedwithvarietyofdifferentinternalmeaningswhicharehereunderstoodas“symbolicmeanings”.Thesedifferencesofcolors’symbolicmeaningsareduetothedi
3、fferentculturalandhistoricalbackgroundsandaestheticconceptionsofdifferentpeopleandareformedwiththedevelopmentofthesocietyandaccretionofhistory.Asacomponentoflanguage,colorwordsarenotonlytheexpressionofhumanbeing’semotion,butalsobearingtheweightofculture’sinformation.Everyculturedevelopsunderdiffere
4、nthistoricalbackgroundsandwithgeographicalenvironment,affectedbyitsownreligion,customandpeople’swayofthinking,whichdirectlycausesthebigdifferencesofcolorwords’symbolicmeaningsbetweenChineseandwesternculture.People’sassociationsofcolorsareofspecificandofabstract.Forexample,whenseeingred,peoplewillco
5、nnectitwiththesun,fire,bloodorflowerinmindandalsohavetheexciting,enthusiastic,andhappyfeelings.Themomenttheassociationbecomesafixedsocialrelationship,thesymbolicorimpliedmeaningofacolorwordwillbeformed.Generally,thesymbolicorimpliedmeaningisinitiatedwiththecoloritself,whichistakenfromtheassociation
6、ofcolorword.Foranotherinstance,blue,inChina,meanssomethingmelancholy,whileinEnglish-speakingcountriesitstandsforsobrietyandcalm.Theexamplesofcolorwordsunderdifferentculturalbackgroundsarebeyond14count.PeoplewholearnEnglishwillthinkabout“red”whentheycomeacrossletter“红”(hong).Forexample:“redapple”inC
7、hineseis“红苹果”(hongpingguo),“redflag”inChineseis“红旗”(hongqi).However,wecan’texpressChinese“红”(hong)withonlyaword“red”whichmaynotmeantherealcolor“red”.Wewillmakebigmistakes,ifwetranslateChinese“红运”(hongyun)in
