3、expresseshisthoughtsbyconcerningthetopicof”sinandatonementforsin”.Asisknowntoall,writerstakeliteratureasawaytoexpresstheirconceptionsandthoughtsonthesocietyinwhichhelives,onnatureinwhichhumanconstituteanelement,andonhisfellowbeings.Asanauthor,Hawthorn

4、eisnotanexception,sohisthoughtswillbereflectedbyhisworks,andthusTheScarletLetterisanalyzedfromthispointofview.A.IntroductiontoHawthorne’sLifeNathanielHawthorne(1804-1864),isanAmericannovelistandshortstorywriter,acentralfigureintheAmericanRenaissance,w

5、hoseworksaredeeplyconcernedwiththeethicalproblemsofsin,punishment,andatonement.Hisbest-knownworksincludeTheScarletLetter(1850)andTheHouseoftheSevenGambles(1851).LikeEdgarAllanPoe,NathanielHawthornetookadarkviewofhumannature.HewasborninSalem,Massachus

6、etts,July4,1804.Hisancestorswereprominentintheaffairsofthecolony.JohnHawthornewasoneofthejudgeswhotriedthewitchesin1620,andJohnHawthornewasamemberofthedignifiedschoolcommitteeofSalemin1796.Hawthorne'sfather,ashipcaptaindiedinaforeignlandwhenhissonwaso

7、nlyfouryearsold;hismotherlivedforfortyyearsafterherhusband’sdeath.ThepeopleofSalemlookedonNathanielasalazyandveryqueerboy.Hegrewupinauniquesolitude.Duringtheseyearsofseclusion,Hawthorneacquiredthehabitofkeepingsilentonalloccasions,andreadingafewbooksf
