EarlylifeJoyce,theeldestof10childreninhisfamilytosurviveinfancy,wassentatagesixtoClongowesWoodCollege,aJesuitboardingschoolthathasbeendescribedas“theEtonofIreland.”Buthisfatherwasn
3、otthemantostayaffluentforlong;hedrank,neglectedhisaffairs,andborrowedmoneyfromhisoffice,andhisfamilysankdeeperanddeeperintopoverty,thechildrenbecomingaccustomedtoconditionsofincreasingsordidness.JoycedidnotreturntoClongowesin1891;insteadhestayedathomeforthenexttwoyearsandtriedtoeducatehimself,askin
4、ghismothertocheckhiswork.InApril1893heandhisbrotherStanislauswereadmitted,withoutfees,toBelvedereCollege,aJesuitgrammarschoolinDublin.JoycedidwellthereacademicallyandwastwiceelectedpresidentoftheMarianSociety,apositionvirtuallythatofheadboy.Heleft,however,underacloud,asitwasthought(correctly)thathe
5、hadlosthisRomanCatholicfaith.HeenteredUniversityCollege,Dublin,whichwasthenstaffedbyJesuitpriests.Therehestudiedlanguagesandreservedhisenergiesforextracurricularactivities,readingwidely—particularlyinbooksnotrecommendedbytheJesuits—andtakinganactivepartinthecollege'sLiteraryandHistoricalSociety.Gre
6、atlyadmiringHenrikIbsen,helearnedDano-Norwegiantoreadtheoriginalandhadanarticle,Ibsen'sNewDrama—areviewoftheplayWhenWeDeadAwaken—publishedintheLondonFortnightlyReviewin1900justafterhis18thbirthday.ThisearlysuccessconfirmedJoyceinhisresolutiontobecomeawriterandpersuadedhisfamily,friends,andteacherst
7、hattheresolutionwasjustified.InOctober1901hepublishedanessay,"TheDayoftheRabblement,"attackingtheIrishLiteraryTheatre(latertheDublinAbbeyTheatre)forcateringtopopulartaste.Joycewasleadingadissolutelifeatthis
