2、tictheoriesalsohavebeenintroducedtothestudyofCECsinrecentdecades.Therefore,thestudiesofCECshaveattainedsomeachievements.Hoptstointerprethoeofthedisputesonthesyntactico-semanticanalysisofCECsanditcanenrichtheliteratureonthestudiesofCECs.Secondly,thepresentstudyrepresen

3、tsoneofthefirstattemptstoapplytheCardiffmodelofSystemicFunctionalGrammar(theCardiffGrammar)tothedescriptionofCECs.EventhoughasmallnumberofscholarshavestudiedexistentialclausesfromtheperspectiveofSystemicFunctionalGrammar,feadopttheapproachoftheCardiffmodelofSystemicFu

4、nctionalGrammartoprobethecharacteristicsofCECs.Thus,thisthesisattemptstomakeaprehensivestudyofCECsfromtheperspectiveoftheCardiffGrammar.Lastbutnotleast,thisthesiscanverifythevalidityofthetheoriesofSystemicFunctionalGrammarandtestifyitsstatusofbeingageneralandappliable

5、linguistics.UptonoicFunctionalGrammarfocusmostlyonEnglish.HoicFunctionalGrammar,asagenerallinguistics(Huang,2007:17),canalsobeappliedtootherlanguages,includingChinese........1.2ObjectivesandresearchquestionsTheoverallaimofthisthesisistoproposeasystemic-functionalanaly

6、sisofthesyntactico-semanticfeaturesofCECsfromtheperspectiveoftheCardiffGrammar.Therearethreeobjectivesrelatedtothisaim:1)toascertainthesyntacticrolesofdifferentconstituentsintheCEC;2)todescribeandexplainthesemanticfeaturesofCECsfromasystemic-functionalperspective;3)to
