2、ngwiththebroadaccesstoinformation.ThemovementtowardsOpenAccessbenefitsofOpenAccess.However,(OA)journalsandrepositoriesisaprimeexampleofthewaytheuniversities'commitmenttoIRsdependsacademyistryingtotakeadvantageofthistechnologythroughwiderdisseminationofresearch,makingitfreeofcharge,andattemp
3、tingtoonbuildingtrustwithfacultyandsolving1lessencopyrightrestrictions.LynchstatesthatInstitutionalRepos-copyrightconcerns.Digitalpreservationitories(IRs)areabletoaddresschallengesfacedbyfacultymembersandcopyrightmanagementinIRsshouldinattemptingtodisseminatetheirresearchthroughtheInternet,
4、and2toutilizevariousformsofdigitalmediaforscholarlycommunication.bestrengthenedtoincreasefacultyHowever,thepotentialvalueofIRsisnotyetfullyappreciatedbyparticipation.facultymembers;severalstudiesindicatethatonlyasmallproportion3offacultydepositarticlesordataintoIRs.Thislowrateoffacultyparti
5、cipationisacommonphenomenonacrossIRs,andincreasingitisamajorissuefortheongoingsuccessoftherepositories.Thisstudyexaminestheperceptionsoffacultymembersfrom17Carnegiedoctorate-grantinguniversitiesintheU.S.regardingIRs.Init,Iexplorefacultymotivationsforparticipatingintheiruniversities'IRs.Prev
6、iousstudieshaveinvestigatedsimilartopics,althoughmosthavefocusedontheattitudesoffacultyinoneortwouniversities,rather4thanfromanumberofuniversities.Inaddition,somestudieshaveexploredacademicauthors'self-archivingpracticesandcomparedpatternsofusebasedonthesubjectdisciplinesorcountriesfrom5whi
7、chthestudyparticipantscame.Anotherstudyhasinvestigatedtheattitudesofauthors,includingprofessors,lecturers,andresearch6fellowstowardstheIRofoneuniversity.Thesestudies,however,wereconcernedmorewitharangeofacademicauthors'self-archivingbehaviors,thaninfocus
