2、uiuc.edu}AbstractScientificdataproblemsdonotstandinisolationbutarepartofalargersetofchallengesassociatedwiththeexpansionofscientificinformationgatheringcapacityandchangesinscholarlycommunicationinthedigitalenvironment.Theseproblemsrequirenewkindsofexpertiseinke
3、yareas,suchasontologydevelopment,datafederation,anddatavisualization.However,recentreportsoncyberinfrastructureande-scienceinitiativesacknowledgeashortageofqualifiedprofessionalstomanagetheincreasingstoresofdataacrossthesciences(NSB,2005).Tobuildthiskindofprofe
4、ssionalcapacity,wehavedevelopedtwocomplementaryeducationalprogramsattheGraduateSchoolofLibraryandInformationScience(GSLIS)attheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana-Champaign.OneistheBiologicalInformationSpecialist(BIS)MasterofSciencedegree,andtheotherisaconcentrationin
5、DataCurationwithintheMasterofScienceinLibraryandInformationScience.InthispaperwediscussthekeyfeaturesofourDataCurationEducationProgram(DCEP),ourapproachtocurriculumdevelopment,andthedatacurationprogram’scontributiontotheBIScurriculum.Toprovideafoundationforcour
6、sedevelopment,weareidentifyingbestpracticesindatacuration,drawingfromavarietyofresources,including1)aresearchfoundationofinformationscienceprojectsinthebiologicalsciencesrelatedtodatacuration;(2)abaseofdomainscientistcollaborators;(3)activeparticipationindiscip
7、linaryinternationalstandardsdevelopment;(4)anadvisorygrouprepresentingbioinformatics,benchandfieldbiosciences,andtheinformationprofessions.CurationforIntegrativeBiologicalSciencesScientificdataproblemsareanintegralpartoftheradicalchangestakingplaceinthepractice
8、ofscience.Newscientificquestions,newdigitalinstrumentation,andnewlevelsofinterdisciplinaryintegrationareleadingtoadramaticincreaseinbothdataandderivedinformation.Simultaneou
