2、hardwiredtoperformasinglefunctionandcannotbereprogrammedtoperformadifferentfunction.Suchsingle-purposemachinesdonotfitthedefinitionforindustrialrobotsthatisbecomingwidelyaccepted.ThisdefinitionwasdevelopedbytherobotInstituteofAmerica:Arobotisareprogrammablemuhifunctio

3、nalmanipulatordesignedtomovematerial,parts,tools,orspecializeddevicesthroughvariableprogranmledmotionsfortheperfommnceofavarietyoftasks.Notethatthisdefinitioncxmtalnsthewordsreprograrnmableandmultifunctional.Itisthesetwocharacteristicsthatseparatethetrueindustrialrobo

4、tfromthevarioussingle-purposemachinesusedinmodernmanufacturingfirms.Theterm"reprogrammable"impliestwothings:Therobotoperatesaec~)rdingtoawrittenprogram,andthisprogramcanberewrittentoacconlmodatcavarietyofmanufacturingtasks.Theterm"multifunctional"meansthattherobotcan,

5、throughreprogrammingandtheuseofdifferentcnd-effectors,performanumberofdifferentmanufacturingtasks.Definitionswrittenaroundthesetwocriticalcharacteristicsarebecomingtheaccepteddefinitionsamongmanufacturingprofessionals.Thefimtarticulatedarmcameaboutin1951andwasusedbyth

6、eU.S.AtomicEnergyCommission.In1954,thefirstprogrammablerobotwasdesignedbyGeorgeDevol.Itwasbasedontwoimportanttechnologies:(1)Numericalcontrol(NC)technology.(2)Remotemanipulationtechnology.Numericalcontroltechnologyprovidedafomaofmachinecontrolideallysuitedtorobots.Ita
