4、uctivityforallestablishmentsinthecluster,thusencouragingotherfirmstolocatethere,andraisinglocalincome.Theideathatspatialclusteringcanraisetheproductivityofestablishmentsishardlynew,havingitsantecedentsineconomicwritingsoveracenturyago.Notsurprisingly,clustershavetraditionallybeen

5、equatedwithcities,ascitiesarebynaturerelativelylargeclustersofeconomicactivity.Yetclusterscanalsobenefitruraleconomies.Althoughprospectsfortheruraleconomyasawholehaveimprovedsignificantlysincethe1980’s,competitionfornewfirmsamongmanylocalareasremainskeen.Theindustryclusterappears

6、tobeadurablecomponentinthedevelopmentspecialist’sarsenal.Someofthelocalareabenefitsfromindustryclustershavebeenmeasured,butthepotentialeffectofraisingworkers’earningshasgonerelativelyunexamined.Inthisarticle,wereportfindingsfromananalysisofmanufacturingestablishmentsshowingthatwo
