4、heplaque.Thesestructurallynormal,lysis-resistantcellsdidnotstainwithfluorescentantibodiesspecificforBCVantigens,failedtoadsorbvirusparticlesormouseerythrocytesincontrasttothesusceptiblecells.Thesurvivalofcellsintheplaqueinteriorreflectsanon-productivelyi
5、nfectedpopulationwithevidenceofviralpersistence.IntroductionCytopathicinteractionofbovinecoronavirus(BCV)withintestinalcellsinducesseriousentericdiseaseinneonatalcalves(DOUGHRIandSTORZ,1977;DOUGHRIetal.,1977;MEBUSetal.,1973).SomestrainsofBCVcanbeadapteda
6、ndpropagatedinseveralcelllinespermittinginvitroinvestigationsofthecytopathiceffects(SHARPEEetal.,1976;DEAetal.,1980;LAPORTEetal.,1979;STORZetal.,1981;TEKTOFFetal.,1983;TOTH,1982).ManyfieldstrainsofBCVfailtoreplicateinculturedbovinecells,butcanbecultivate
7、dinHRT-18cells(ST.CYR-COATSandSTORZ,1988),anintestinalcelllinederivedfromanadenocarcinomainahumanrectum(TOMPKINSetal.,1974).AlargepercentageoftheHRT-18cellssurviveintheinfectedcultureevenwhenviralcytopathicexpressionisenhancedbytheinclusionoftrypsininthe
8、culturemedium(ST.CYR-COATSetal.,1988).ThesesurvivingcellsimpartacharacteristicturbiditytoBCV-inducedplaques.WeanalyzedthesurvivingHRT-18cellsthatareresistanttotheBCVcytocidaleffectsforviraladsorption,hemadsorption,andantig
