3、importanceofvirusesascausesofenteritisinthenewbornbecamerecentlyevident(8,9,11,14,15,16,21,25).Theviralcauseoftransmissiblegastroenteritisofnewbornpigs(7)wasfirstidentifiedasacoronavirusbyTAJIMA(26).Latercoronaviruseswererecognizedasacauseofenteritisandhepatitisinmice(22),andenteritisofcalv
4、es(23)anddogs(1).ThecoronavirusstrainLY-138usedinthepresentstudieshadbeenrecoveredin1965fromintestinalsamplesofnewborndiarrheiccalves.Severalattemptstocultivatethisstrainindifferenttypesofculturedbovinefetalcellswereunsuccessful.Thisviralagentwasmaintainedbyoralinocula-tionandintestinalinfe
5、ctionofnewborncalves(6).ThepurposeofthepresentstudywastodescribehistopathologicintestinalchangesandtorelatethemtoultrastructuralcytopathicfeaturesobservedinintestinalepithelialcellsofnewborncalvesinoculatedorallywithLY-138coronavirus.MaterialandMethodsSevenconventionalnewborncalveswereuseda
