1、METHOD6020INDUCTIVELYCOUPLEDPLASMA-MASSSPECTROMETRY1.0SCOPEANDAPPLICATION1.1Inductivelycoupledplasma-massspectrometry(ICP-MS)isapplicabletothedeterminationofsub-µg/Lconcentrationsofalargenumberofelementsinwatersamplesandinwasteextractsordigests[1,2].Whendissolvedconstituentsarerequired,sampl
2、esmustbefilteredandacid-preservedpriortoanalysis.Nodigestionisrequiredpriortoanalysisfordissolvedelementsinwatersamples.Aciddigestionpriortofiltrationandanalysisisrequiredforgroundwater,aqueoussamples,industrialwastes,soils,sludges,sediments,andothersolidwastesforwhichtotal(acid-leachable)el
3、ementsarerequired.1.2ICP-MShasbeenappliedtothedeterminationofover60elementsinvariousmatrices.AnalytesforwhichEPAhasdemonstratedtheacceptabilityofMethod6020inamulti-laboratorystudyonsolidwastesarelistedinTable1.Acceptabilityofthemethodforanelementwasbaseduponthemulti-laboratoryperformancecomp
4、aredwiththatofeitherfurnaceatomicabsorptionspectroscopyorinductivelycoupledplasma-atomicemissionspectroscopy.Itshouldbenotedthatthemulti-laboratorystudywasconductedin1986.Multi-laboratoryperformancedataforthelistedelements(andothers)areprovidedinSection9.Instrumentdetectionlimits,sensitiviti
5、es,andlinearrangeswillvarywiththematrices,instrumentation,andoperatingconditions.Inrelativelysimplematrices,detectionlimitswillgenerallybebelow0.02µg/L.1.3IfMethod6020isusedtodetermineanyanalytenotlistedinTable1,itistheresponsibilityoftheanalysttodemonstratetheaccuracyandprecisionoftheMethod
6、inthewastetobeanalyzed.Theanalystisalwaysrequiredtomonitorpotentialsourcesofinterferencesandtakeappropriateactiontoensuredataofknownquality(seeSection8.4).1.4Useofthismethodisrestrictedtospectroscopistswhoareknowledgeableintherecognitionandinthecorrectionofspectral,chemical,andphysicalinterf
