3、ddingtoanexistingsystemapre-editingmodulewhichrewritesheadlinesasordinaryexpressions.Rewritingofheadlinesmakesitpossibletogeneratebettertranslationswhichwouldnototherwisebegenerated,withlittleornochangestotheexistingpartsofthesystem.Focusingontheabsenceofaf
4、ormoftheverbbeasamissingpartofnormalEnglish,wehavedescribedrewritingrulesforputtingproperlytheverbbeintoheadlines,basedoninformationobtainedbymorpho-lexicalandroughsyntacticanalysis.WehaveincorporatedtheproposedmethodintoourEnglishJapaneseMTsystem,andcarrie

6、lesthroughtheInternet,itbecomesmoreimportanttotranslatethemcorrectlyintoJapanese.Sincethemostessentialinformationofarticlesisexpressedbyheadlines,theirsuccessfultranslationisoftheessence.Headlinesmustconveymuchinformation,expressingitasconciselyaspos-sible,
7、sotheyhavecharacteristicstylesdifferentfromthoseofordinarysentences.Thecharacteristicstylesarelikelytodamagethequalityoftranslationbyprevent-ingasyntacticparserfromgeneratingappropriateparsetreesforheadlines,thusdecreasingthequalityoftranslation.Thereareatl
