3、ournalinthis®eld.Therecipientof24honorarydegreesandmanymedals,ProfessorZienkiewiczisalsoamemberof®veacademies±anhonourhehasreceivedforhismanycontributionstothefundamentaldevelopmentsofthe®niteelementmethod.In1978,hebecameaFellowoftheRoyalSocietyandtheRoyalAcademyofEngineering.Thiswasfollowedbyh
4、iselectionasaforeignmembertotheU.S.AcademyofEngineering(1981),thePolishAcademyofScience(1985),theChineseAcademyofSciences(1998),andtheNationalAcademyofScience,Italy(AcademiadeiLincei)(1999).Hepublishedthe®rsteditionofthisbookin1967anditremainedtheonlybookonthesubjectuntil1971.ProfessorR.L.Taylo
5、rhasmorethan35years'experienceinthemodellingandsimu-lationofstructuresandsolidcontinuaincludingtwoyearsinindustry.In1991hewaselectedtomembershipintheU.S.NationalAcademyofEngineeringinrecognitionofhiseducationalandresearchcontributionstothe®eldofcomputationalmechanics.HewasappointedastheT.Y.andM
6、argaretLinProfessorofEngineeringin1992and,in1994,receivedtheBerkeleyCitation,thehighesthonourawardedbytheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley.In1997,ProfessorTaylorwasmadeaFellowintheU.S.AssociationforComputationalMechanicsandrecentlyhewaselectedFellowintheInternationalAssociationofComputationalMech
