3、Engineeringwhichstillremainstodaythemajorjournalinthis®eld.Therecipientof24honorarydegreesandmanymedals,ProfessorZienkiewiczisalsoamemberof®veacademies±anhonourhehasreceivedforhismanycontributionstothefundamentaldevelopmentsofthe®niteelementmethod.In1978,hebecameaFellowofth
4、eRoyalSocietyandtheRoyalAcademyofEngineering.ThiswasfollowedbyhiselectionasaforeignmembertotheU.S.AcademyofEngineering(1981),thePolishAcademyofScience(1985),theChineseAcademyofSciences(1998),andtheNationalAcademyofScience,Italy(AcademiadeiLincei)(1999).Hepublishedthe®rstedi
5、tionofthisbookin1967anditremainedtheonlybookonthesubjectuntil1971.ProfessorR.L.Taylorhasmorethan35years'experienceinthemodellingandsimu-lationofstructuresandsolidcontinuaincludingtwoyearsinindustry.In1991hewaselectedtomembershipintheU.S.NationalAcademyofEngineeringinrecogni
6、tionofhiseducationalandresearchcontributionstothe®eldofcomputationalmechanics.HewasappointedastheT.Y.andMargaretLinProfessorofEngineeringin1992and,in1994,receivedtheBerkeleyCitation,thehighesthonourawardedbytheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley.In1997,ProfessorTaylorwasmadeaFe
7、llowintheU.S.AssociationforComputationalMechanicsandrecentlyhewaselectedFellowintheInternationalAssociationofComputationalMechanics,andwasawardedtheUSACMJohnvonNeumannMedal.ProfessorTaylorhaswrittenseveralcomputerprogramsfor®niteelementanalysisofstructuralandnon-structurals
